Good morning, my timeless treasures!
Yes, I mean you!
Somebody reminded me yesterday that I still have a lot of value and joy to share in this life. Thanks for allowing me to share some of that with all of you in this blog.
I thought this sculpture was a perfect symbol for my post. Lately, I’ve been trying to declutter, and this piece was sitting in my “toss” pile. It’s something I picked up at Goodwill years ago for just a few dollars. But, as I often do, I snapped a picture and searched online with Google image search. That’s when I discovered similar sculptures by an artist named John Roberts.
Curious, I took another look at my piece and noticed someone had attached felt to the bottom. When I peeled the felt off, I found a signature—John Roberts! The signature matched the ones I found online.
Here’s what I learned:
“Most of John Roberts’ carvings were made in the 1950s. He lived in Volcano, on the Big Island of Hawaii. A sought-after and talented artist, his works are featured in the Honolulu Academy of Arts, and pieces have been sold at Bonhams and Christie’s.”
This was such a great reminder for me: I’m not ready to be an old discarded relic! Like all vintage works of art, the key is finding the people who truly appreciate our value.
